Construction on the Great Falls-Dearborn Diversion Bypass began in the spring of 2021 and is expected to be completed by fall 2022. The most effective way to fish the tailrace is from a raft or drift boat because access is limited on foot. These lakes are named the Catawba River Chain of Lakes. They are the most tolerant trout species and can live in waters upward of 70 degrees. The fish are wild and beautiful. For fly fishers its hard to beat squirmy worms, mops flies, and eggs. The graph below shows the stream flow (discharge) for the past 7-days. We have had some stupid, good days on the Catawba Tailrace over the last month so its good to see the rainbow trout that were stocked back in the winter doing so well. This stretch has long, deep holes that hold good populations of bass in the summertime moving upstream from the lake looking for those cooler river temperatures. Another notable bass fishing lake in the coastal plain region is Lake Waccamaw. We are big on teaching then catching at our guide service because youve got to be able to do things the right way before you start catching. We look forward to fishing with you. Brown trout are elusive and considered one of the most difficult trout species to catch. The Catawba Tailrace has an excellent caddis hatch beginning in early March that can last till mid April. There are more wild rainbow trout in the wild trout streams than any other species. Stoneflies and caddis imitations are still the name of the game on most fisheries in western North Carolina. The French Broad has been off colored since the beginning of July so I havent gotten the opportunity to fish it that much. Always fish the conditions. The Tarheel State has three major geological regions which include the Appalachian Mountains, Piedmont, and Atlantic Coastal Plains. We received our last stocking of trout the first week of May so the Delayed Harvest stretches have been fishing well. The water was clear coming out of muddy creek and we had a no release flow. Thats why tightlining is so effective because essentially there is no drag on the fly. I enjoy taking people to the delayed harvest to boost their confidence before chasing wild trout because it can be a humbling experience. See you on the water. The main focus is getting the kids hooked on having a good time on the water. One of the best holes on the creek is going to be the handicap holes right off the main road. The best fishing is below Waterville dam and into East Tennessee. Its good to pop poppers in deeper water close to ledges because weve caught some good smallmouth drumming them up in deep water. Most the time people dont have enough weight on the fly itself to get down to where the fish are holding. We will go into more details about that when the time is right.
